This course explores the fundamental principles, practices, and cultural contexts of shamanism, offering students a comprehensive understanding of this ancient spiritual tradition. Through discussions, and experiential practices, participants will engage with the concepts of spirit work, altered states of consciousness, and shamanic healing.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Understand the historical and cultural origins of shamanism.

  • Explore core concepts such as the spirit world, power animals, and sacred tools.

  • Experience basic shamanic techniques, including journeying and ritual practice.

  • Develop an appreciation for ethical and respectful engagement with shamanic traditions.

 

Course Duration: 2 Days 

Day 1 The Journey Ahead

 

  • Definitions and key characteristics of shamanism.

  • Focus on the practice of the Shamanic Journey 

  • Methods of Journeying 

Mapping the Spirit World

  •  Understanding the three-world framework (Upper, Middle, Lower Worlds).

  • Sacred landscapes and their spiritual significance

  • Spirit guides and power animals: what they are and how to connect.

  • Introduction to journeying techniques to explore these landscapes

Day 2

Day 2: Healing Practices in Shamanism

  • The shaman as a healer: physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions.

  • An introduction to Shamanic Healing practices

  • Energy clearing exercise for personal healing.

Over the two days we will also look at: 

  • Sacred tools: drums, rattles, feathers, and more.

  • Creating sacred space for ritual and journeying.

Integrating shamanic insights into daily life.

Shamanism in the modern world: challenges and opportunities.

Exploring contemporary adaptations of traditional practices.

Course Requirements: 

Preparation: It is imperative that no recreational drugs or alcohol is consumed for 48 hours prior to the course

​Materials Needed

   •   Notebook/journal.

   •   Comfortable clothing for meditative practices.

   •   Optional: drum, rattle, or other sacred tools (if available).

  • Cushion and blanket
